Preventive Care for Your Teeth and Gums
Routine dental exams and cleanings are key to maintaining a healthy smile. Your dentist and hygienist monitor the health of your teeth and gums, screen for cavities, gum disease, and other concerns, and recommend treatments as needed.
Our goal is to keep your exam and cleaning appointments as comfortable as possible. We offer blankets, pillows, and eye masks to keep you comfortable and play music throughout the clinic to keep the environment calm and welcoming.

How Often Should I Have a Dental Appointment?
Routine dental appointments are vital to your oral and overall health. These appointments allow us to check for any sign of a problem, such as a cavity, before the tooth needs significant repairs. It also allows our hygienists to thoroughly clean your teeth and prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar that can lead to cavities or gum disease.
We recommend all adult patients have a dental exam once a year with dental cleanings every 6 months. Depending on your specific needs, we may recommend a personalized dental cleaning schedule after your first appointment.
What to Expect During a Dental Exam
Dental exams are completed by the dentist, with assistance from dental technicians and your hygienist. Each exam typically includes:
- Review of health history: Your team will review any changes or concerns you’ve noticed since your last visit.
- Oral examination: Your dentist will thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, and mouth for signs of decay, gum disease, or other potential concerns.
- Dental X-rays: We can perform various X-rays of your teeth, as needed.
- Digital intraoral scan: We use the iTeroⓇ digital scanner to capture a full, 3D image of your teeth and gums, so you can see exactly what we do.
- Check jaw and bite alignment: We assess the fit and alignment of your teeth and jaw to make sure nothing is causing you pain or excess wear on your teeth.
- Explaining our findings: Using the intraoral scan, we will show you what our exam revealed and let you know if we recommend any next steps, such as fillings.
What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning
Dental cleanings are performed by your hygienist. Each cleaning typically includes:
- A review of health history: Your hygienist will check in to see if you’ve experienced any pain or other symptoms since your last visit.
- Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT): Your hygienist will use a special dye to check your teeth for biofilm accumulation, directing their cleaning to areas of concern.
- AirFlow cleaning: If you request the AirFlow device, your hygienist will use it to clean biofilm and plaque from your teeth, minimizing scaling time.
- Scaling and polishing: Your hygienist will perform a comprehensive cleaning, removing plaque, tartar, and biofilm from your teeth. Then they will polish your teeth for that post-dentist shine.
- Fluoride treatment: We may recommend a fluoride treatment at the end of your appointment to strengthen your enamel. You’ll need to avoid food and drinks for at least 30 minutes after your fluoride treatment.
AirFlow and Guided Biofilm Therapy
Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) provides a more effective and comfortable dental cleaning. This method uses a dye to highlight biofilm accumulation on your teeth, showing the areas that need more attention while you’re brushing and flossing. Our hygienists also use the dye to direct their focus to the areas that require attention during your cleaning.
The AirFlow device uses air, water, and a fine powder to create a high-pressure stream that cleans plaque and biofilm off your teeth, often without scraping. It is a gentler and more efficient way to clean your teeth, allowing your hygienist to spend less time scaling. This is especially beneficial for patients with gum sensitivity or dental implants.
Routine Dental Care Is Preventive Healthcare
Routine dental exams can uncover signs of decay or small cavities before they cause you pain. By catching these issues early, we can address issues with small fillings, adjusting your brushing and flossing habits, or changing your hygiene appointment frequency. This allows you to protect your teeth and prevent more costly treatments later on.
Our goal is to keep your teeth and gums happy and healthy. We’ll always discuss our findings with you and show you any areas of concern, so you can understand and take control of your oral health. We look forward to answering any questions you have.
